Quinn Group
UGAAWA/QUINN INSURANCE MERIT AWARD FOR OCTOBER ‘10.
There was a time when selecting the Ulster GAA Writers' Monthly Merit Award winner
for the winter months was quite a problem as most action ceased after the All-Ireland
SFC and SHC finals were decided. That's not the case anymore as top action continues
right to the new year.
In the light of that, there was plenty of magical moments from
which to choose when the selectors got down to naming the winner of the Quinn Insurance/UGAAWA
award for October but after the usual arguments one light shone bright through the
darkness.
That was Donegal and Termon footballer Geraldine McLaughlin who had a month
to remember as she helped her county to All-Ireland Intermediate Football Championship
success and her club to their first ever Ulster SFC
title.
It was lively full-forward
Geraldine (17) who was on the spot to blast home the winning score (3-6 to 0-13)
for Termon in injury time as she stopped Donaghmoyne from collecting their sixth
consecutive Ulster senior title
"I'm in shock at hearing I have won this award," enthused
the Letterkenny Leaving Cert student. "In fact I wasn't really aware of the award
and to be told I'm the winner takes my breath away."
This could be a good week for
Geraldine as she has also been nominated for an Allstar Award at next Saturday night's
banquet in the City West Hotel, Dublin.
The presentation was made at a function in
Quinn's Corner by Rory Rafferty, Quinn's Commercial Representative. She receives
a UGAAWA Sports voucher, an engraved Belleek China vase, jewellery from Garrett Mallon
Omeath and training gear from O'Neill's International Sports. She also gets two tickets
and overnight accommodation for the Ulster GAA Writers' banquet at the Slieve Russell
Hotel on November 19.
