UGAAWA/QUINN INSURANCE MERIT AWARD FOR JUNE ‘10.

At home or abroad Paul Brady will mix it with the best and, especially, across the Atlantic he has no peers when it comes to handball.

June was a particular milestone in the life of the Breffni battler. Despite his team’s defeat by Fermanagh in the USFC quarter-final, Brady emerged as a strong contender for ‘Man-of-the-Match’ and the following week he jetted off to Texas to thrash all opposition in the USHA Men’s Open Nationals.

For these performances, Brady has been honoured with the Quinn-insurance/UGAAWA Merit Award for last month. He was presented with his award at a function in the Slieve Russell Hotel, by Quinn Insurance Relationship Manager Sean Murray.

To receive the award, Paul travelled from the JP McManus Charity pro-am in Limerick, where he was a guest, on Monday evening and returned to Adare Manor the following morning.

“I couldn’t miss being here to receive the award as I regard it as a very big honour,” he enthused. “With so much going on in the GAA at this time it is certainly a terrific honour to be chosen for the award and I thank the Ulster GAA Writers for it.”

There to see their county colleague getting the award were Ulster GAA President Aoghan Farrell and Ulster PRO Oliver Galligan.

Recalled President Farrell: “Not many know it but I came into the GAA through handball and I have an All-Ireland title to my name. Dominic Sheridan and I won a colleges’ All-Ireland title. I am very pleased that Paul has been acknowledged for his magnificent deeds. He has now surpassed the great Pat Kirby.”

Brady, winner of six-in-a-row US Men’s National titles, edged out Monaghan footballer Conor McManus, Aisling Reilly the winner of the US Women’s singles and doubles and Antrim hurler Karl McKeegan for the award.

When handing over the award of an engraved Belleek China Vase, specially designed silver cuff links from Omeath Jeweller Garrett Mallon, a UGAAWA sports voucher and training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports, Sean Murray quipped: “It’s strange for a Leitrim man to be presenting a Cavan man with an award.”

Paul Brady will also receive two tickets and overnight accommodation for the UGAAWA banquet at Slieve Russell Hotel on November 19
