During championship time there are always candidates up front for our Tennent’s/UGAAWA Monthly Merit Award and so it was in June. Two candidates stood out among the other contenders – Brian Dooher for his superb display against Donegal and Thomas Freeman for two outstanding performances, against Down and Derry.

After the usual full discussion on the merits of both contenders the choice of winner fell to Monaghan winger THOMAS FREEMAN.

Not only did the Magheracloone man hit five points against Down and seven against Derry but he was also responsible for setting up many other scores for his attacking colleagues. In Casement Park, against Derry, he covered practically every blade of grass as he popped up in midfield, on the right and on the left to prove a big thorn in the Oak Leaf hedge.

“Ach, it was a good team performance,” reflected Thomas, “and I never expected that I would be honoured with the Monthly Award. I’m over the moon, delighted with the award and I thank you all very, very much for choosing me.”

It’s Freeman’s second time to collect the award. He was also honoured in April 2005 for his displays in helping Monaghan to the final of Div.2 in the National Football Leagues.

At club level, Thomas has won one Monaghan SFC and two SFL medals plus minor championship and league trophies. With his county he has won a NFL Div.2 and a Dr McKenna Cup medal while with Ulster he has collected two Railway Cup winners’ and one runners-up medal. Now he looks forward to the 2007 Ulster SFC final against Tyrone.

As his award, Thomas received a Tennent’s Ireland Sports voucher, an engraved Belleek China vase, training gear from Pro*Star Sports and specially designed silver cuff link s from Omeath jeweller Gareth Mallon.
He will also receive two tickets plus overnight accommodation at the Great Northern Hotel for the annual dinner on November 24.

The presentation was made at a reception in the Ulster Brewery, on Wednesday, July 4, by Seamus Horisk, the Regional Controller for Tennent's Ireland.
