Cavan footballers haven’t figured highly in our monthly award lists over the past few years with Jason Reilly in February 2001 being the last Breffni boy, until now, to be honoured for his outdoor pursuits.
Handballer Paul Brady has, of course, kept the blue flag flying with a number of awards but now football is back in the spotlight as SEANIE JOHNSTON picks up the Tennent’s/UGAAWA honour for March 2008. That’s because of a string of outstanding performances in the Allianz NFL last month.
Cavan may be struggling a little in Div.2 but it would have been much worse but for the scoring exploits of Johnston. Against Meath he rifled over eight points, hit half-a-dozen against Dublin and cracked home a nice nine, including the winner, in atrocious conditions against Cork.
It all adds up to a high profile month for the Cavan Gaels winger who is now studying PE at DCU after successfully completing an Accountancy and Finance degree at the north Dublin seat of learning.
“It is a fierce honour to get this award,” enthused Seanie when told of his selection. “I know a lot of players who have received it in the past and to have my name added to that illustrious list is fantastic. This is a quality award. Paul Brady and I are close friends and I have admired his awards in the past.”
Johnston was also heading down the handball court in his teenage days, winning a number of underage All-Ireland titles. “But I finally decided to give handball a rest and concentrate on my football career,” he explained.
In football, Seanie has won quite a lot with the Cavan Gaels from county and Ulster minor championship medals to five Cavan SFC awards and league titles, a Sigerson Cup medal and a place in the Sigerson Allstars’ team. This year he helped DCU to win the Ryan Cup. He was also a member of the Gaels Under-17 side that won the Paul McGirr Tournament.
Johnston received his award of a Tennent’s Sports Voucher, an engraved Belleek China Vase, specially designed Silver Cuff Links from Omeath Jeweller Garret Mallon and training gear from O’Neill Sports from Dermot Coey, InBev Accounts Manager, at a reception in the Ulster Brewery, Belfast, on Wednesday, April 9. He will also receive two tickets and overnight accommodation for the UGAAWA 2008 banquet at the Hillgrove Hotel, Monaghan, on Saturday, November 1.
Johnston received the award ahead of Paul Finlay (Monaghan) and Mathew Keenan (Fermanagh) with a special mention also given to the South Down hurling team that, in its first season, shares top of Div.4 with Fermanagh and Monaghan.
