UGAAWA Press Release for Raymond Mulgrew

TENNENTS/UGAAWA MERIT AWARD - SEPTEMBER 2004

THE Tyrone supply line continues with the Red Hand teenagers proving that there is more to come from ‘among the bushes’. Victory in the All-Irealnd Minor Football Championship final, with victory voer Kerry, has thrown up some new stars and none better than RAYMOND MULGREW who took a firm grip on midfield during the under-18 decider at Croke Park.
The Cookstown Fr Rocks’ player was outstanding and forced Kerry to take their star man out of the game. For that heroic display we honour Raymond with our UGAAWA/Tennent’s Monthly Merit Award for September. He shaded team colleagues Paul Marlow and skipper Marc Cunningham for the award with Magheracloone’s first Monaghan SFC win and Down’s appearance in the All-Ireland Junior Camogie final also getting honourable mentions.
“I suppose I’m still on a high since winning the minor final and this award is a lovely extra bonus. I’m delighted with it and it makes up a little for us (Cookstown) losing to Carrickmore last Saturday in the Tyrone minor semi-final,” says Raymond who celebrated his 18th birthday last March. “That defeat brought me back down to earth somewhat.”
He is currently an ‘A’ Levels student at St Patrick’s Academy and after that hopes to study either Quantity Surveying or PE at UUJ.
Raymond was a member of the St Patrick’s Academy team that won the Bank of Ireland MacRory Cup final last St Patrick’s Day and then went on to reach the All-Ireland Colleges’ final before losing to St Patrick’s, Navan
“That was a low point of the season. I’d have liked to have done it for the school, as well as, the county,” commented Raymond who is the third Tyrone person, after Peter Kerr (Carrickmore) and Brian McGuigan (Ardboe), to be honoured with our award this year.
At a presentation, made by Area Sales Manager Seamus Horisk, in the Ulster Brewery on Wednesday, October 6, Raymond received a sports voucher from Tennent’s Ireland, training gear from Pro*Star Sport, an engraved Belleek China vase and a double invitation to the UGAAWA banquet in Bundoran on November 19.
