TENNENT'S/UGAAWA MONTHLY MERIT AWARD
June 2006

The Tennent's /UGAAWA Monthly Merit Award for June 2006 has been awarded to Letterkenny School teacher Rory Kavanagh. Rory was presented with his award, by Seamus Horisk, Regional Sales Manager, Tennents Lager, and Sean McMahon, UGAAWA Chairman.

Championship time produces many outstanding performances and we could have argued over many candidates, who produced excellent performances last month and would be worthy of our Tennent’s Merit Award.
In the end the list was narrowed to just two – Donegal’s Rory Kavanagh and Antrim under-18 dual star Conor McGourty, who turned in stunning displays at minor level in both football and hurling. After much debate the Merit Award for June goes to RORY KAVANAGH.
The Letterkenny 23-year-old schoolteacher burst on the scene this season and produced super shows against Down and Derry in championship games last month. In the Ulster quarter-final against the Mourne side, Kavanagh hit 1-2 with his goal being of the stunning variety.
In the semi-final against Derry, the St Eunan’s player fired home five points, as well as, contributing much more in general play.
“June was certainly a great month for Donegal and myself and I hope it will continue in the final. I’m absolutely thrilled at receiving this award. It is a great boost to me personally going into the final. It’s really brilliant to get it,” enthuses Rory.
Many people may have forgotten that Rory went in as a sub for Donegal in the replayed championship game with Dublin at Croke Park in 2000 and also entered the game with Armagh in the Ulster final two years ago.
He is now teaching at Scóil Colmcille in Letterkenny and has won many honours from Under-14 up with St Eunan’s. Those honours included Donegal SFC, SFL and Under-21 FC medals.
Rory was presented with his award by Seamus Horisk at a function in the Ulster Brewery on Wednesday, July 5. His award included a Tennent’s Sports Voucher, an engraved Belleek China vase, training gear from Pro*Star Sports, specially designed silver cuff links from Omeath Jeweller Gareth Mallon and two tickets plus overnight accommodation at our annual banquet in the Great Northern Hotel, Bundoran, next November.
