TENNENT'S/UGAAWA MERIT AWARD FOR DECEMBER 2003

Tyrone football may be on the
crest of a wave but rarely doesn't a team from the Red Hand County brush
aside all others in hurling. That's what Carrickmore minors have achieved
by winning the Ulster Under-18 annual competition.
The Eire Ogs brushed aside
caman strongholds such as Keady, Banagher and Ballycran to collect the club's
first provincial hurling title and it is due to the dedication and hard
work of the team's manager PETER KERR.
College lecturer
Peter (34) is a hurler of note himself but over the past
decade has been instilling the delights of the caman game into the youth
of Carrickmore. Most of the present minor side has been under his guidance
since they were nine or ten years of age and now the fruits of the labour
have ripened.
"Some of these lads
are second generation hurlers so that makes it a bit easier," explains
the manager. "It was a mighty achievement to win the Ulster minor title.
It was always our dream to give Ulster a rattle," he enthuses.
Peter is still a major
cog in the Carrickmore senior teams and has played with Tyrone hurlers.
He has won seven Tyrone SHC medals and three Tyrone SFC awards. He was also
a member of the Carrickmore team that collected the Ulster Hurling Shield
a couple of years ago. His brothers Oliver and John are also noted Carrickmore
hurlers.
Peter Kerr, the first hurling
man from Tyrone to feature in our monthly
awards, edged out teenagers for the honour. He was presented with his award,
which included a Belleek vase, sports vouchers from Tennent's and Pro-Star
Sport, by Seamus Horisk, Tennent's Regional Sales Manager, at a reception
in the Ulster Brewery on Wednesday, January 14.
Peter receives the award
ahead of Joe Quigley, who captained Armagh Harps to win the Ulster MF Tournament,
and Sean Downey (Carrickmacross Emmet's) who shone during the St Paul's
event.
