MONTHLY MERIT AWARD
May 2006

The month of May
was a bit like the Curate's Egg, 'Good in parts and bad in parts' but, nevertheless
there was plenty of activity to cause controversy when it came to choosing
out Tennent's Merit Award.
In the end the person who got the nod was Armagh newcomer PAUL DUFFY
who had a slight advantage in that he played two games during last month.
Both were against Monaghan in the Ulster SFC and he starred in both.
Duffy (22) made his senior
debut in last year's championship and had a few outings in the National
Leue and Dr McKenna but he has surely now stamped his name firmly into Joe
Kernan's mind and laid mighty strong claims for a permanent place in the
Orchard County line-out. A member of the Pearse Og Club, Paul was a prominent
minor player, winning three county championship medals and adding an Ulster
one, as well, when he played with the Ogs at full-back in the St Paul's
Ulster U18 annual tournament.
"I tried anyhow against
Monaghan," was Paul's causal comment on his performances. And about
winning this award he said: "I'm very happy to win it."
A joiner by trade, Paul
is now looking forward to next Sunday's Ulster semi-final clash with Fermanagh
and he was impressed with Derry's hunger in their defeat of Tyrone.
It was Derry's Enda Muldoon
who scored the vital goal against Tyrone, as well as a some useful first
half points, that ran Paul Duffy closest for the May Merit Award while others
in the frame were Kevin Dyas, goal-scorer-in-chief for Abbey CBS Newry in
the Hogan Cup final, Derry full-back Kevin McCloy, Fermanagh Ciaran O'Reilly
and Antrim's Michael McCann.
This is a second Tennent's
Merit Award for the Duffy Clan. Paul's cousin Pauric won the honour when
he captained Pearse Og to victory in the Ulster Minor final
As his award, Paul Duffy
receives a £100 Tennent's Ireland Sports voucher, an engraved Belleek
China vase, wet and dry training gear from Pro*Star Sports, specially designed
silver cuff links from Gareth Mallon Omeath and two tickets plus overnight
accommodation to our banquet at the Great Northern Hotel in Bundoran next
November.
The presentation was made
at a function in the Ulster Brewery on Wednesday, June 7 by Area Sales Manager
Seamus Horisk.
