UGAAWA Press Release for Owen Mulligan

TENNENT’S/UGAAWA MERIT AWARD FOR AUGUST 2005

The celebrations continue for OWEN MULLIGAN as he becomes the third Tyrone winner in a row of the Tennent’s/UGAAWA Monthly Merit Award. The Cookstown sizzler gets the honour for August after superb performances in the All-Ireland quarter-final against Dublin.

In the drawn game, it was Mulligan who rocked the Dubs back on their heels with a super solo goal that must be well in the running for the ‘Goal of the Year’. He tagged on a point and in the replay hit home 1-7, with 1-5 being from play. He also won the ‘Man of the Match’ trophy in the Dublin action.

“Everything just clicked for me,” reflects Owen (24). “I didn’t care who scored as long as we won but I’m delighted that my performances have earned me the Monthly Merit Award. I’m delighted with that.”

Owen has packed a lot into his football life. He has won an All-Ireland Celtic Cross, three Ulster SFC medals, two All-Ireland Under-21 and two All-Ireland Minor awards, two NFL medals and All-Ireland Vocational Schools’ awards with both Tyrone and Holy Trinity College, Cookstown.

It is possible that joiner Owen will nail down further honours but, in the meantime, he collects the Tennent’s/UGAAWA Award for August ahead of Ronan Clarke who starred with Armagh against Laois, Martin Clarke who shone for Down minors in their All-Ireland semi-final with Offaly and Fermanagh’s Tearnach Mahon who made history by becoming the first Ulster referee to take charge of an All-Ireland senior hurling final.

At a reception in the Triangle at Ulster Brewery in Belfast, Owen Mulligan received his award of a Tennent’s voucher, an engraved Belleek China vase, training gear from Pro*Star Sports and specially designed silver cuff links from Gareth Mallon Jewellery in Omeath. The presentation was made by Terry McCourt, Business Development Manager InBev Ireland.
