During May there was a series of football and hurling championship games with a variety of players catching the eye but, on reflection, we had no hesitation in naming Fermanagh captain MARTY McGRATH as the winner of our Tennent’s Monthly Merit Award.

The big Ederney man stood as a tower of strength in midfield, at Brewster Park, as Fermanagh defeated favourites Monaghan in the quarter-final of the Ulster Senior Football Championship. He led his troops by example with a series of fine fetches, astute passes and scything runs. When duty called he stood up and was counted.

In winning our Merit Award for May, Marty (27) joins an elite group of winners, who have collected the award three times or more. Peter Canavan leads the list with eight awards, Paul Brady has five and now Marty McGrath joins Stephen O’Neill and Fiona Shannon on three. McGrath’s previous awards were won in January 2002 and August 2004.

“To win this prestigious award once is fantastic but to win it three times or more is superb. It’s a very nice honour and I’m thrilled to receive it again. I’m sure there were many other players in the running and it is great that I have been selected. It is a great bonus after beating Monaghan,” enthused the Quinn Group salesman.

Cavan’s Seanie Johnston, after his excellent display against Antrim, at Casement Park, was certainly in the frame while others noted for their performances were Fermanagh’s Mark Little, Jane Adams who hit 14 points against Down in the Ulster Camogie Championship and London hurler Martin Finn who scored 13 against Armagh in the USHC quarter-final.

As his award, former Allstar Marty McGrath received a Tennent’s Sports Voucher, an inscribed Belleek China vase, specially engraved silver cuff links from Omeath Jeweller Gareth Mallon and training gear from O’Neill’s International Sports. He will also receive two tickets and overnight accommodation for our 2008 annual banquet. The presentation was made at a function in the Ulster Brewery on Wednesday, June 4 by Stephen Jackson, InBev Fermanagh Area Accounts Manager.
