The GAA season never stops so that gives us plenty of fodder to chew over when we sit down to select our Tennent’s Monthly Merit winner for December. The Ulster minor football and hurling tournaments are the main field action, of course, but there is also a lot of activity indoors.
However, when the nominations were considered, the arguments debated and the voting counted the winner emerged as LEE KENNEDY, the left winger in the Kilrea team that won the St Paul’s organised Ulster Minor Football competition with victory over Errigal-Ciarán in the final.
Lee starred in the lead up games to the decider against Cavan Gaels and Tempo. He also emerged as the winner of the Ann-Marie Donnelly trophy winner as the Player of the Final, which was played on January 1.
“I must admit that I was not aware of the Ulster GAA Writers’ Tennent’s Monthly Merit Award,” admitted Lee when told that he was the winner. “It’s a nice surprise. Winning the Ulster final and now this award makes up a lot on losing the All-Ireland minor final last year.”
Kennedy, an apprentice plumber, has won a collection of honours at various underage levels with Kilrea and as now signed off his minor days with Ulster honours.
To win the Tennent’s Monthly Merit Award he had to beat off the claims of his Kilrea captain James Kielt, newly-elected Monaghan secretary Ailish McEntee (the first women elected to the position in Monaghan) and Conor Woods, who captained Ballycran to victory in the Ulster Minor Hurling, scoring some excellent long-range points.
As his award, Lee Kennedy received a Tennent’s Ireland Sports Voucher, an engraved Belleek China Vase, specially designed cuff links from Omeath jeweller Gareth Mallon, training gear from Pro*Star Sport and he will get two tickets plus overnight accommodation for the Ulster GAA Writers’ 2008 banquet.
The presentation was made at a lunch in the Ulster Brewery on Wednesday, January 9 by Matt Swift, Account Manager InBev Ireland.
NB: Embargoed until Sunday, January 13.
