It seems that our Tennent’s Monthly
Award winners are intent on making history. Last month,
Paul Kernan became the first third member of a family to collect the prestigious
honour – now it’s KEVIN McMENAMIN who steps
into history.
The pint-sized Donegal attacker collects the award after just three games at inter-county level. He made his debut on the county scene in the Gaelic Life Dr McKenna Cup with Donegal and immediately put his name in lights.
“I never played county football at any level before” says the Termon terrier who is Belfast-born. “I was included in the Antrim under-21 panel three years ago but I never got into the team so I decided to forget about Antrim. Travelling for training was too much of a hassle.”
During the McKenna Cup he chalked up 11 points and continued the good form last Saturday night when he cracked home 1-2 against Cork in the National Football League – a performance that gives him a toe in the door for the February award!
“I never knew about this monthly award until I was contacted and told that I was the winner,” reveals Kevin (25). “This is all new to me and I’m really honoured to be selected as the January winner.”
Kevin, a machine driver, played for two summers with the Boston-based Donegal exiles, winning a championship medal there. He stayed at home the following year as Termon stormed to the Donegal SFC final against Four Masters but the north county side failed to lift the trophy.
For the January award, Kevin outpointed UUJ captain Mark Lynch, Cavan’s Michael Cunningham and Coalisland minor captain Brian Toner who was also in the mix for December.
The winner was hosted at a reception in the Ulster Brewery on Wednesday, February 7 as he received his award of a Tennent’s Sports Voucher, an engraved Belleek China vase, sports gear from Pro*Star Sport and engraved silver cuff links, compliments of Garrett Mallon Jewellery, Omeath. He will also receive two complimentary tickets plus overnight accommodation at the UGAAWA banquet next November.
