Last month’s
GAA scene was as mad as a ‘March Hare’. We had National Football
and Hurling League games, All-Ireland Club Championship matches in hurling
and football, Sigerson and Fitzgibbon Cup clashes and college games in football,
hurling and camogie.
Despite
the rush of action sorting out a winner for our Tennent’s
Monthly Merit Award didn’t take as much head scratching
or argument as one might expect. One man stood out head and shoulders above
the rest – Donegal’s BRENDAN DEVENNEY.
The Letterkenny
comeback cracker has completely transformed the Tir Connail firing squad
with some excellent scoring feats, such as a couple of magical late points
that helped to polish off Kerry at Ballybofey.
Salesman
Brendan is glad to be back in county football. He missed all of 2006. “It
was painful watching Donegal playing and not being part of it so I decided
that I wanted back and I’m thankful to Brian McIvor who gave me the
chance to make a claim for a place in the team again,” says Brendan
(30).
Why wouldn’t
he be glad to be back after producing a string of class displays in Donegal’s
charge to the National League semi-finals and after this week’s highlights?
Yesterday, he was in Dublin to receive the Vodophone Player of the Month
award and today (April 5) he receives the prestigious Tennent’s/UGAAWA
Merit Award.
“It’s
nice to follow the Dublin award with the big one,” quipped Brendan
when told of the honour. He surely has got his priorities right!
Brendan
gets the award ahead of fellow Donegal players Barry Dunnion and Paddy Campbell;
Armagh’s Stevie McDonnell and Sean Teague who helped Greencastle to
win the All-Ireland IFC final.
Seamus
Horisk, Tennent’s Regional Sales Manager, presents the winner with
a Tennent’s Ireland voucher, an inscribed Belleek China vase, wet
and dry training gear from Pro*Star Sports and specially designed silver
cuff links from Gareth Mallon Omeath. He will also get two tickets and overnight
accommodation for the Ulster GAA Writers’ 20th annual banquet at the
Great Northern Hotel next November.
